Mr. Biden wants to increase tariffs on Chinese steel three times

The message he gave on April 17, during a visit to steel workers in Pennsylvania, where union support could play an important role in the re-election race to the White House this year.

The tax rate Mr. Biden wants to impose on steel and aluminum imported from China is 22.5%, an increase of 3 times compared to the current level (7.5%).

China produces about half of the world’s steel and is supplying more than the domestic market needs.

The US imported $6.1 billion in steel in the 12 months through February 2023, but only 3% of that came from China.

However, the White House said it would pursue anti-dumping investigations against countries and importers that try to damage domestic markets with foreign steel.

US President Joe Biden at the election campaign in Pennsylvania on March 8.

White House national economic advisor Lael Brainard stated that the President recognizes the need to invest and protect American manufacturing and workers from unfair export practices related to China’s overcapacity.

Mr. Biden’s message was welcomed by domestic manufacturers of this product.

However, some worry that tax increases will bring major economic risks.

Inflation is a headache for Mr. Biden.

In response, Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers Jared Bernstein said that considering a sharp increase in tariffs on Chinese metal products would not affect inflation and was necessary for national security.

`If we do not act, we will risk one of the most important sectors of the economy,` said Mr. Jared Bernstein.

During a recent visit to China, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the country’s flooding of the global market with cheap goods and low steel prices has seriously damaged industries around the world.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is also about to visit the country.

Also during the visit on April 17, when asked about escalating trade tensions with China, Mr. Biden replied `there is no trade war`.
